Junior Surf Sunday Sessions

“Fun on the Sand, Confidence in the Surf. Friends for the Journey.”

These weekly sessions are the heart of our Junior Surf program — and where everyone begins!

Running most Sundays from November to mid-March, these one-hour sessions (9:45–10:45am) are designed for kids aged 5 to 13 to explore beach safety, surf zone awareness, and build confidence in the ocean through fun, play-based learning.

Children are loosely grouped by age, but there's flexibility to move between groups based on confidence, skill level, or if they have a friend they'd like to be with. As long as safety is maintained and the group sizes allow, we’re happy to adjust — the goal is for every child to feel comfortable, supported, and safe.

To join, children must be 5 years old by September 30 of this year. While we know there are some adventurous four-year-olds out there, this age limit is based on our health and safety requirements and insurance coverage.

What to Expect

Each session includes a mix of beach games, water safety activities, and surf zone skills, tailored to ocean conditions and time of year. Sessions may occasionally shift to a Friday evening or Saturday — see our session calendar for full details.

Regular attendance helps build both confidence and capability, as each week builds on the last. But don’t worry — we get that life is busy, and there's great coffee nearby if you need extra motivation!

Parent Support

This program is run by parent volunteers and thrives on your support. A 1:5 adult-to-child ratio in the water means we need parents to help with supervision, water safety, and equipment set-up/pack-down. You don’t need any experience — we’ll guide you, and make sure you’re having just as much fun as the kids!

Competitions (Optional!)

Although competitions are not the focus, kids who are keen to give surf sports a go can try them out later in the season. Events like the Pukehina Harris Cup (which our whole club attends) and friendly junior carnivals at Papamoa and Omanu SLSC provide a relaxed, encouraging environment to experience competition. These events help build resilience, teamwork, and a sense of achievement in a fun, low-pressure setting. More details will be given out as these events approach.
